The Walrus Mustache: How to Grow, Guide, Examples, and More!

Walrus mustache

The walrus mustache: it’s like a beard on your upper lip. Well, maybe not quite, but there’s no denying that, as mustache styles go, the walrus is one that offers you the opportunity to grow a whole lotta mustache.

The walrus is characterized by thick, bushy, whiskers that droop over the mouth. Because the style resembles the whiskers of a walrus, it earned its unique name.

The walrus mustache dates to the long-ago and grew immensely popular in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century as everyone from cowboys, to philosophers, and scientists sported the look.

And let’s not forget author Mark Twain, whose walrus mustache was a thing to behold.

It’s easy to confuse the walrus with the Chevron mustache. But the walrus is more overgrown and rounded than the Chevron.

What the Walrus Mustache Says About You

The walrus mustache is a heavy, droopy mustache named for its similarity to the whiskers of a walrus.

The handlebar mustache is very similar in appearance to the walrus, but the handlebar has upward sweeping tips.

A couple of things about the walrus style: if you’re wearing it, you’re probably older, and you probably like the simpler things in life.

You have patience, good humor, but you’re not to be messed with if pushed beyond your limits. Women consider you a sweetheart, but “expressing your feelings” isn’t something that appeals to you at all.

What Face Shape Best Fits the Walrus Mustache?

The walrus style works best if you have a rounder, larger face, but not a longer face.

Well, having the right face shape for a Walrus mustache can be helpful, but it isn’t completely necessary.

However, you may want to consider your face shape when choosing facial hair styles. This can help you select the best one for your look and appearance.

Mustaches generally look best on men with long faces, as they will help to add width to their appearance. This makes them ideal for thinner or skinnier faces. However, this doesn’t mean that men with wider faces can’t wear mustaches. It just means that they may have more difficulty in finding one that looks good on them.

How to Grow a Walrus Mustache

You’ll need a bit of patience when it comes to growing a walrus mustache. Let your mustache hair grow naturally, as long as three or four months if necessary, until it has become seriously thick.

We’re not kidding here: let it grow until it covers your upper lips and even your mouth. Resist the urge to trim it during the growing phase!

Once it has reached full volume and length, you’ll need to comb it daily to keep it into the shape you desire. Trim its length and volume only when absolutely needed. Again, it’s not far-fetched to think of it as a beard above your mouth and lips.

What Famous People Wear the Walrus Mustache

This is a surprisingly long list – American president Theodore Roosevelt, rock musician David Crosby, Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as Jamie Hyneman of the television show “MythBusters.”

  • All facial hair styles
  • Will it ever get to the point where I stop being disgusted by having the sensation of hair in my mouth whenever I eat something. I am hoping there is a point of growth where this will stop. As of now, in mid walrus growth, I feel like a whale with baleen everytime I eat.

    • Lol yes you get use to it but, if you floss regularly you will get hairs stuck between your teeth sometime. Flossing is not easy with a walrus.

  • It also needs your mustache to grow all over all the way up to our nose, mine don’t at all and I still consider it too thick even when wearing a beard, so I even shape it a bit thinner, the way Johnny Depp’s grows, though more naturally, in his case. My point, all the more power to many differently aesthetical style, what I can’t fathom to see on myself and might not be my style at all, by all mean flaunt it confidently and make it yours, you’ll make it beautiful, that goes for men and women!
