In the grand scheme of things, your underarm hair isn’t all that important. Yes, it...

In the grand scheme of things, your underarm hair isn’t all that important. Yes, it serves a variety of functions, but your health won’t fall apart if you choose to shave it.

And, yes, it’s not particularly attractive, especially when it looks like a wild forest, but it doesn’t generate nearly the revulsion as back hair. If you want to shave it, and many men do, more power to you. We’re here to help with our guide on how to shave armpits.

We’ll discuss the various steps in the process from start to finish, while hopefully helping you to avoid common shaving issues such as skin irritation, nicks, and cuts. Let’s begin.

How to Shave Armpits in 10 Simple, Illustrated Steps (for Guys)

Any guide on how to shave your armpits for beginners should include every step, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. It doesn’t hurt to mention some of the benefits of shaving your underarms, either, including:

It may reduce sweating which leads to body odor

It may help improve your performance if you’re an athlete

It may make you more attractive to others

You have an over-abundance of armpit hair

While there’s no definitive reason why you must shave your underarms, the evidence against shaving them isn’t that strong, either. In short, it’s a choice left up to you; you may love it, you may regret it, or you may think that it’s not that big of a deal.

1. Trim first

It’s a good idea to trim your armpit hair whether you plan to shave them clean or not.

It’s not a great look if you have an unruly underarm bush that pokes out of your short sleeve shirt or makes an appearance between your arm and body when standing with your arms at your sides while bare-chested.

But you want to trim it before you shave it clean. That’s especially important if you’re shaving your armpits for the first time because it helps make the job easier when you may be feeling a bit apprehensive about the process.

We suggest trimming your “pit bush” with a quality body groomer, such as the Philips Norelco Bodygroom Series 7000, before tackling the larger task at hand.

Set the length guard on your trimmer or groomer to a longer setting. It’s a good idea to trim the underarm hair to about a quarter of an inch before shaving it. The longer guard setting helps to prevent the blades from pulling the hair as you go over it with your groomer.

You can always use a sharp pair of grooming scissors if you prefer, or if you don’t own a groomer or trimmer.

If you decide you’d rather trim your underarm hair rather than shaving it off, you should only need to do it every one of two weeks to keep it at bay. But we’re here to discuss shaving your armpits down to the skin.

Here’s another helpful tip for preparing your armpits for shaving: it’s always helpful to rub a loofah or soft washcloth under your arms a few times a week. Doing so helps remove dead skin cells that could trap new hair and lead to ingrown hair and other skin irritation.

2. Shave in the shower

There are many advantages to shaving in the shower, whether you shave your armpits, your face, your pubes, your legs – whatever:

The shower’s hot water is an important part of preparations before you begin shaving your armpit hair. The water’s heat helps soften your underarm hair’s texture, which makes it easier for your razor to get through the often-thick tuft of hair.

The cleanup process is much easier when you shave in the shower. The shower’s stream rinses off the newly trimmed hair and washes it down the drain.

The water helps to maintain lubrication, which is important for avoiding skin irritation, nicks, and cuts.

Your razor gets clogged less because it’s exposed to the continuous stream of water.

The softer the hair, the closer the shave. It’s hard to beat the combination of moisture and warmth that a shower provides.

You can always shave as soon as you get out of the shower while the hair is still soft, but it’s more convenient overall if you shave your armpits while you’re already in it.

You can also soften your armpit hair by splashing warm or hot water on it without getting in the shower, and then massaging the underarm to open up its pores. Again, it’s probably more convenient, and less messy, if you relegate your armpit shaving to the shower.

3. Use a sharp razor

You know what it’s like to use a dull razor on your face, i.e., one that has all the sharpness of a butter knife. The goal is to get a close shave after all, and a sharp razor is a key component of how to shave armpits without stubble.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when using a razor:

A two-blade razor is a good choice because fewer blades generally mean less irritation and fewer cuts.

A sharp, clean razor blade protects against razor bumps and ingrown hair. Razor bumps begin to form when hair follicles begin to grow underneath the skin instead of out of it, which can lead to itching, burning and redness. You may not avoid developing razor bumps entirely, but you’ll significantly reduce your chances with a sharp blade.

A sharp blade allows you to get a smoother shave. A dull blade won’t cut through all your armpit’s hair follicles as effectively as a sharp one.

A sharp blade also helps to prevent infection. Rusty, or well-worn blades may harbor microorganisms that get into your pores and cause infection.

It never hurts to be too cautious or proactive, so check your razor’s blade before every time you shave. Making sure that it’s clean and sharp before each use will help you to get a cleaner shave without irritation.

4. Apply a good amount of shaving cream

Shaving creams and gels are your friends when shaving your armpits, or any part of your body for that matter. They stimulate the hair follicles while protecting your skin from abrasions.

The good news is that you have plenty of gels and creams from which to choose but choose carefully. Our article on the best shaving creams for men should help you to make an informed decision.

Don’t be afraid to apply a liberal amount of shaving cream or lotion to your armpits before you begin to shave. As we just mentioned, a quality shave cream stimulates your hair follicles and pores to make the task of shaving easier.

Shaving cream also helps lift the hair away from the skin to make it easier to shave. It also acts as a lubricant for the razor to help it move smoothly without, hopefully, chafing and scraping.

Some shave creams and lotion even include antiseptics that help the pores from becoming infected, as well as moisturizers that protect the skin and keep it from drying out.

5. Raise your arm over your head

While the ceiling in your shower may or may not be high enough to allow you to raise your arm to its full length, you want to lift it high enough so that you have a clear path to your underarm.

It also helps to pull the skin taut, which ensures that there aren’t any wrinkles or skin folds that get in the way of your razor. You want the shaving surface to be as even and flat as possible.

Raising your arm also gives you a clear view of the area which you’ll shave, which certainly helps make for a more thorough job and, hopefully, one that includes fewer mishaps that may lead to cuts and scrapes.

Or, you can invest in a fogless shower mirror, such as the Deluxe Shower Mirror by Shave Well, that can help guide the way when shaving in the shower.

6. Shave in multiple directions

It doesn’t hurt to be a little unpredictable when shaving your armpits. Not unpredictable in a bad way, mind you, but unpredictable in that you shave in multiple directions.

A good place to start is at the top of the underarm. Drag the head of the razor along your underarm until you reach the bottom of the armpit hair, then shave from the bottom up with both straight and side-to-side motions.

It’s important to remember that armpit hair tends to grow in various directions, so it doesn’t have an even grain like the hair on other parts of your body.

If you wonder how to trim armpit hair without itching, shaving in multiple directions and trimming the hair down beforehand are good places to start. Post-shaving care, which we’ll discuss in a little bit, also helps reduce itching and other irritations.

Use long, smooth straight strokes no matter which direction you choose, and try to shave as much as hair as possible with every pass of the razor.

Always take your time when shaving, even if you’re running behind and it’s one of those mornings when getting out the door and into the world is tremendously difficult.

Repeat the shaving process with the other arm in the same way: lift your arm to help make the skin taut and even, apply a good amount of shaving cream or lotion to your armpit, and shave in multiple directions.

7. Rinse your razor frequently

Shaving cream, lotion, and gels can quickly clog a razor, especially if you apply a liberal amount of them to the shaving surface.

There’s no need to panic when that happens, but make sure to rinse the head of your razor under the shower stream frequently – like after every few strokes.

Whatever you do, don’t tap your razor against a hard surface to clear it of excess shaving cream and lotion. You can damage the razor and its blades.

If the blades become too clogged, which shouldn’t happen often, you may need to clear them with a small brush, or even with the corner of a washcloth.

8. Rinse with cold water

It’s important to splash or run some cold water on your armpits after you’ve shaved them. The steam and the heat of the shower open pores and soften the hair, which is ideal for shaving, while cold water closes the pores afterward to help soothe your skin.

Cold water also helps to cut down on skin inflammation that may result from shaving.

You may not want to rinse your armpits under a cold stream of water in the shower – we get it. Your pores will shrink, but so may some, ahem, other parts of your body.

So, dry off the rest of your body, and use cold water from your bathroom sink to splash onto your armpits.

9. Pat your pits dry

Use a clean towel to pat your armpits dry after you’ve finished shaving (and after you’ve splashed cold water on them). Don’t rub them dry with a vigorous motion because you can irritate skin that you’ve just shaved.

Don’t rub them; this can lead to irritation and ingrown hairs, which are no fun. If you have sensitive skin and experience irritation after shaving, it’s a good idea to moisturize the area with an emollient like coconut oil or shea butter.

The skin on your underarms is thin and delicate, so it’s important to handle them with care. Avoid vigorously rubbing the area with a towel, as this can cause irritation or even tiny cuts in the skin. By using a dry towel to gently blot the area, you can avoid these problems and leave your underarms feeling clean and smooth.

10. Apply a moisturizer

The final step in the process is just as important as the others, if not more so. That is, you should always apply a moisturizer or other type of body lotion to your armpits after you’ve shaved them.

A good moisturizer or lotion soothes the skin, reduces the chances of inflammation and itching, and usually has a pleasant scent that’s nice to have in an area of the body which can get a bit smelly.

Look for a moisturizer formulated for use on sensitive skin. Again, the skin of your armpits is more sensitive than many other areas of the body, including your face.

You can also splash on an antiseptic that can prevent bacteria from entering the hair follicles. It helps to reduce the chances of infection.

Also, avoid putting deodorant immediately after you’ve shaved your armpits because it can make irritation worse. Finish your other grooming duties first to let the skin recover, so to speak, before applying deodorant.

Conclusion

If you’re among the many men who have or want to shave their armpits, we tip our caps. There are plenty of reasons for doing it and your reasons may differ from another man.

No matter why you want to do it, however, it’s a good idea to know how. Taking the right steps, doing the job carefully, using the right tools – all will make your shaving experience better and without irritation.

Do you shave your underarms? If so, how long have you been doing it? We’d love to hear from you, as always.

There is one key, cardinal error men make when looking to improve their grooming: They...

There is one key, cardinal error men make when looking to improve their grooming:

They try to simply emulate the men they deem to be most attractive.

Most men take a quick look at the celebrities they most admire, and think ‘hmm, maybe I could look like Ryan Gosling/Reynolds/Seacrest with the right haircut/moisturizer/jacket…’

But the reality is, really effective grooming – grooming that makes you more attractive, more confident, more successful, and more in control – is about responding to your own, specific personal attributes.

It’s about focusing on your natural strengths and minimizing your natural weaknesses.

Because unless you’re Brad Pitt or Danny DeVito, you’re probably a bit of a mix:

You have some absolutely great features and some…decidedly less so.

And that’s fine:

You’re human.

It’s not about what you’ve got.

It’s about what you do with it.

Now, most men’s grooming tips tend to focus on specific instructions:

How to do your eyebrows or apply beard balm.

And that’s great – we need that.

But in this article, we’re going to look at eight men’s grooming tips that tend to get lost in all the noise.

We’re going to look at some truly fundamental principles that the average grooming guide overlooks.

Principles that will actually help you understand and see yourself in a new, more positive light.

Rather than trying to emulate someone else, you’ll be on the way to cultivating a routine that’s specific to your needs and aspirations.

Because it’s no good knowing which male grooming products are ‘best’ if you don’t know what you’re working with, or what to do with it!

So we’re going to talk about you:

What you need to know about ‘what you’ve got,’ and how you need to approach ‘what you do with it.’

And we’re going to start all that by making sense of your hair…

Whether you’re a plumber, a lawyer or a barista, it’s important to present yourself in the best way possible. While you don’t have to worry about wearing a suit and tie every day, that doesn’t mean you can slack off in your grooming routine. You only have one shot at making a first impression.

Instead of telling you what products to use, here are eight grooming tips that will change the way you see yourself.

1. Your Hair Has Very Specific Needs, Limits And Potential

Hair is more complicated than you think.

While we all understand that there are many different ‘types’ of hair – wavy, straight, thin, thick – we often forget that different people’s hair varies far more than even these numerous categories suggest.

There is thickness, texture, color, hairline, the speed at which it grows, and any number of other considerations to take into account.

And each of these facets adds up to the very specific cocktail of strengths and weaknesses that is your hair.

In part, this difference is ‘rooted’ in complex genetic factors.

But there are also huge environmental and contextual factors – from how much stress you experience to how old you happen to be.

The truth is, lots of men wait until something is going wrong – until, for example, they need help because it’s thinning – before they pay proper attention to their hair.

The most important thing is, to be honest:

It may be there are things about your hair you would prefer were different.

But denial won’t change this, and being honest is actually the very best way to ensure you can make real, tangible improvements to your style and grooming.

Of course, lots of men look at men’s hair grooming tips and invest time into taming their mane.

But plenty more are guilty of overlooking quite how idiosyncratic their hair might be, and this diminishes the quality of their grooming regime.

Why?

Because they miss out on all sorts of ways, they might use what they’ve got to their advantage and improve it.

Think of it as a person:

If you’re trying to nurture a person, there are plenty of things all people have in common.

But clearly, knowing this particular person’s proclivities – their limitations, needs, and potential – is going to be essential to ensuring they grow to be the best person possible.

And it’s the same with your hair:

There is plenty of advice that applies to all hair types and all men.

And some hair problems can be tackled with a scientific approach.

But just as often, you will be best served by having a clear, pre-existing understanding of which bits of advice are relevant to your hair and what it is you’re specifically trying to achieve with it.

So the best investment in your grooming regime may well end up being taking the time to figure this out.

Experiment, talk to your barber and really observe how your hair behaves.

Because then you’ll be ready to take on everything else…

2. Your Facial Shape Is Always Relevant

Lots of men’s grooming tips will try to tell you which haircuts are ‘in’ right now, or how you ‘should’ wear your beard.

But the problem is, there simply is no one-size-fits-all solution to how you should cut your hair, shape your eyebrows, grow your beard or dress yourself.

It’s not just that your hair is uniquely yours:

It’s that these things– and many more – are entirely reliant on the shape of your face.

Yet most men don’t even have a very good sense of what kind of facial shape they’re rocking.

Generally, that’s because men don’t often talk about things like that.

And we don’t like to feel limited in what we can achieve.

But the reality is those limitations are actually opportunities.

Because understanding your particular facial shape opens the door to finding new ways to hugely improve your appearance.

There are four basic facial shapes:

Round, Oval, Square, and Heart-shaped.

And there is no ‘correct’ or ‘best’ facial shape – so there’s no need to be scared!

Figuring out which type of facial shape you have – as well as noting all the idiosyncratic elements of your facial structure – might just be the difference between good grooming and great grooming.

Because this understanding will do several things for you:

It will save you from wasting time on haircuts and beard-styles, which do less than nothing for you.

It will help you implement grooming advice more effectively by knowing which advice is relevant to you.

And most importantly, it will help you determine the style icons most in-line with your appearance, so you can take your cues from someone you might actually be able to emulate!

For example:

Beards aren’t just another type of hair to style.

They actually shape and frame your face – like makeup for men.

So by understanding your particular facial shape – and what it’s strengths and weaknesses are – you can utilize your beard to sharper your jaw, lengthen your cheeks, or any number of other things you might want to achieve.

3. Your Skin Is Unique, And You Need To Understand It

Skin is one of the most challenging, troubling elements of any man’s grooming regime.

And annoyingly, it’s also one of the most important.

Your skin is a complex biological entity that is constantly interacting with your surroundings.

Everything from the heat of the room to the amount of stress you’ve been under can radically affect the tone, quality, texture, and complexion of your skin.

And all of those things, in turn, can radically affect how attractive you look and how confident you feel.

Many men spend huge amounts of money trying to fix their skin with expensive products.

But not enough, spend the time to really get to know and understand their skin.

In fact, 51% of men believe a good diet is enough to maintain great skin.

And while proper healthy eating is super important, if that’s the only thing you’re doing to improve and maintain your skin, you’re seriously missing out.

There are several fundamental ‘types’ of skin: some are dry; some oily; some sensitive; some combination.

And you probably already know that.

But what you may not know is this:

The boundaries between these types are actually very fluid, and most people’s skin is, in fact, rather unique to them and their particular experiences.

So while some aspects of your skin are generalizable, and you can follow advice for a specific ‘type’ of skin, it’s also important to have a more nuanced understanding of it.

Getting to know your skin – how it reacts in different situations, to different chemicals, at different times – is absolutely essential to being able to really work with it and give it everything it needs – at all times of the year.

All that in order to get the absolute best results possible.

And that is not at all straightforward:

You may actually need to do some experimenting.

Rather than waiting for the magic moisturizer that will give you the skin of your dreams with a single drop, you need to be proactively trying different products, making notes and taking the time to really understand what it is your skin does and does not respond well to.

All of which sounds a lot rather like research…

4. Great Groomers Learn To Research

Here’s a galling thought:

77% of men use their friends and significant others for information about grooming, yet only 43% use magazines or blogs.

This means that over half of men approach their grooming based on word-of-mouth speculation rather than expert recommendations and proper, rigorous research.

Now, you might see no problem with this:

Who can you trust if not your family and friends?

But in truth, unless you happen to surround yourself with dermatologists, stylists, and hygiene experts, the information you’re getting is based entirely on their own experience and will be particular to their own specific attributes.

And as we’ve already discussed plenty here, your personal grooming needs and wants are deeply specific to you.

You need to start thoroughly researching the products you use and the grooming techniques you practice– so that you understand not only what is available, but what’s in it, how it works, and why.

Let’s say you’re thinking about shaving your armpits:

How do you make that decision?

If you ask your friends, you’ll get a litany of individual ‘hot takes’ on the apparent benefits or drawbacks.

But what you won’t get is the sort of meticulous, detailed perspective you really need to understand how your body might react and how the decision might affect your life.

Now that you know more about your specific facial shape, skin, and hair, your choices will need to reflect that.

And the best way to do so is by starting to devote the time and effort to really getting to grips with what’s out there.

Not just taking your mate’s word for it cause his hair happens to be on point.

Now, I get it:

Research feels like work.

And who needs more of that?

But the truth is, research is actually incredibly empowering.

It will save you time, help you find cool, unexpected grooming tricks, and prepare you to make more informed decisions and know what to expect.

And it will draw your attention to the nitty-gritty details that make the biggest difference in the end…

5. Never Neglect The Small Stuff

Here’s another galling thought:

Within seconds of your meeting, people from all sorts of opinions about you based almost exclusively on your appearance.

And once those opinions are formed, it takes a great deal of effort to change a person’s mind.

These are opinions on your attractiveness, competence, authority, likability – basically everything your grooming is supposed to enhance.

And interestingly, people are almost never consciously aware of how or why they formed these opinions.

It’s often small, imperceptible things like slightly awkward posture or uneven hair that dictates these all-important first impressions.

And therefore it’s often these small, seemingly-unimportant things which are actually most influential in how effective your grooming is.

Most men’s grooming tips focus on the big stuff – what hairstyle to have or what jackets to wear.

But this means lots of men likewise focus the lion’s share of their attention on these things.

Which, of course, you should.

However, you should never focus on big questions of hairstyle and outfit choice at the expense of smaller details.

There’s a danger of assuming that some aspects of your grooming – hair on your back, or on your feet, or in your ears – can simply be neglected and ignored.

Because it can be hidden, right?

And it won’t have any real effect on your life.

But the truth is, neglecting these small things will have knock-on effects on your confidence.

And leaves you open to all sorts of embarrassing mishaps.

For example:

Trimming your nasal hair is nobody’s favorite task.

And it might seem like something you can ‘get away with’ overlooking.

But 46% of women say they would rather talk to a man who has bad breath (!) than someone who has stray hair sticking out of their nose.

So can you really afford to ignore it?

I suspect people neglect the smaller, less glamourous aspects of grooming for a few reasons:

For one, no one is ever going to compliment your perfectly shaved ears or superbly smooth, well-groomed back.

And it feels supremely boring to spend time attending to tiny details which appear – to you – to have no effect whatsoever on your appearance.

But really great grooming is all about details – about approaching everything with a level of clinical specificity and considered care and attention.

This means you need to develop the discipline and skill to attend to even the smallest, most unsexy details of your appearance…

6. Grooming Is A Discipline, And You Have To Keep Learning

According to some reports, men spend, on average, as much as 3.2 hours per week grooming.

However, if you’re like a lot of men, you spend most of this time going through an established routine.

You’ve learned to wash your face properly and do your hair ‘just right,’ and now you can basically do the whole thing on autopilot.

Which is great if your goal is to save time, be consistent, and have one less thing to think about.

The problem comes when you realize how limiting it is to approach your grooming this way.

Because while you’re perfectly competent at all the things you’re used to doing, this complacency leaves you unable to take more risks and make more challenging, interesting, or bold grooming decisions.

What you can do with your grooming is limited by what you’ve already done with it in the past, and that leaves very little room for improvement, experiment, and fun.

Think of it as a sport:

You’re competing with other people, sure.

7. But Most Importantly, You Should Be Competing With Yourself

Rather than resting on their laurels and thinking, ‘I know what I’m doing here,’ really well-groomed men are always learning more and adding new skills to their repertoire.

Why?

Because they know that every part of their grooming regime – from how they do their hair to how they trim their nails – is a discipline that can be improved with a little care and attention.

And they know the effect of putting in that care and attention will be more than worth it in the end.

So well-groomed men aren’t just making good decisions:

They’re really highly skilled.

When you first shaved, you probably made a right old mess of it.

But even a few weeks later, I’m sure you were seeing visible improvements and feeling more confident.

Lots of men simply stop learning once they attain that perfectly acceptable, adequate level of skill – once they stop cutting themselves when they shave or know how to apply hair product.

So here’s the question:

Do you want your appearance – and, therefore, your confidence and how people perceive you – to be dictated by limitations in your abilities?

Or do you want to continue improving your grooming – and, therefore, the results you get?

If it’s the latter – and I suspect for most men, when they actually think about it, it is – then you need to start thinking about every part of your grooming routine as a skill you’re honing.

And start putting the time and effort in to really, truly master it.

Because apart from anything else, this will make grooming so much more fun to do…

8. Enjoying Grooming Is The Best Way To Succeed At It

Having fun and enjoying yourself doesn’t only make things more pleasurable:

It also helps you learn new skills and encourages you to maintain your routine.

For lots of men, grooming becomes a tiring, tedious chore.

And this means they’re likely to get lazy, rush or overlook it altogether on certain days.

But you can’t get great grooming results if you’re picking and choosing when to bother with your routine.

Because it builds over time.

Improvements in your skin, for example, will slowly build up via consistency and confidence.

It’s no good having a solid exfoliating regime one week and not washing your face even once the next.

And therefore making sure that grooming is something you want to do – that you feel good doing and actively look forward to – is essential.

For some, this might seem strange:

Grooming is seen as serious.

And of course, it is, in the simple sense that it’s important and has real effects on your life.

The problem comes when men see this seriousness as an obligation:

They come to think of grooming as something they have to endure, a Sisyphean burden they must heroically undertake for the good of their complexion.

But this idea is ludicrous:

Seriousness is never incompatible with enjoyment.

If you’re going to spend several hours each week doing something, it seems a more than worthy investment of time to figure out ways you can make it fun for yourself.

It might be that you start listening to exciting, uplifting music during your morning grooming session.

Or you might figure out games to play with yourself while you do it.

Or, as with the previous rule, turning your grooming into a challenge, something you’re working on actively improving might be the thing which makes it genuinely engaging for you, something you genuinely look forward to.

The more idiosyncratic your routine becomes – the more you are paying attention to your specific attributes and following your personal vision – the more enjoyable it will become.

And this positivity will have a knock-on effect on everything else in your life.

It’s important to remember the reason you spend your time grooming – all the research and energy and money you invest in it:

Because you want to look good.

And a big part of looking good is feeling good.

As informative and important as all other men’s grooming tips are, the single most powerful thing a man can do – for his appearance, his status, everything – is feeling confident, comfortable and happy in who he is.

So please:

Never forget to do that.

Conclusion

And there we have it.

We’ve looked at eight simple ways you can immediately improve your grooming routine.

Just a little bit of self-awareness and attention to detail can make all the difference.

Rather than offering the standard men’s grooming tips, I’ve tried to give you some insights which will have a more far-reaching impact on the way you approach your routine.

I know that these simple steps have helped me totally transform the way I think about grooming and the way I see myself.

So which grooming tip has had the most impact on you?

What simple change has made the biggest difference?

How do you believe grooming should be approached?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re just trying to find a reliable body hair trimmer. You want to groom your body hair, feel good, and look your best, but instead, you’re sifting through endless reviews, comparing features, and trying to figure out what all these different trimmers do. It’s enough to make anyone give up and reach for an old razor, or worse, use that outdated trimmer that’s been collecting dust since your grandma bought it for you.

But trust me, don’t do that. This guide is designed to make your life easier by highlighting eight of the best body hair trimmers available today. Whether you’re trimming your chest, back, or other areas, these picks will help you find the right fit.

Plus, I’ll cover some essential tips on what to look for when choosing a trimmer, so you can feel confident about your decision.

Before You Buy: 5 Things to Consider When Buying a Body Hair Trimmer

Let’s talk about the key things I’ve learned to look out for when choosing a body hair trimmer. Whether you pick one from the list or not, these considerations will help you make the right choice.

1. Specialization

Not all body hair trimmers are designed for the same job. Some of the best ones can handle everything, from chest hair to nose and ear hair. Others are more focused on specific tasks—like shaving your back.

One thing to keep in mind: most body hair trimmers aren’t built for your beard. It’s a bit of a shock to many, but using a beard trimmer on your body can lead to inconsistent results, or worse, irritate your skin.

Before you buy, figure out what exactly you need the trimmer for. Are you trimming everything or just focusing on one area? The right device will match your specific needs.

2. Features

Once you’ve found a trimmer that suits your needs, it’s time to look at its features. Some devices offer a lot, from multiple attachments to waterproof capabilities. The key is making sure it has the features that matter to you.

For example, if you prefer shaving in the shower, you’ll want a fully waterproof trimmer, ideally rechargeable, with decent battery life. You don’t want to deal with long cords in a wet environment.

But if you don’t shave in the shower, you can opt for a cheaper, non-waterproof model. Why pay for features you won’t use?

3. Price

Of course, price is a big consideration. Even if you’re not on a tight budget, you want to get the best value for your money.

Sometimes, two devices will have similar features, but one is noticeably cheaper. Other times, the higher price tag may reflect better quality or a specific feature that’s worth the extra cost.

It’s important to think about long-term value, too. The more expensive trimmer might last longer or offer more durability, saving you money in the long run compared to a cheaper one that needs frequent replacements.

4. Brand

When it comes to personal grooming, some brands have earned their reputation. Philips Norelco is one that I’ve personally found to be synonymous with quality. But there are other reliable brands like Remington and Manscaped, which offer solid alternatives.

That said, just because a brand has a good name doesn’t mean every product they make is worth the price. It’s important to consider whether the brand’s reputation is worth paying a premium for.

5. Quality

Quality matters, and this goes beyond the brand name. Even within the same brand, you can find a wide range of quality. Some models might be great, while others fall short.

Look for things like blade quality, build durability, and overall performance. A trimmer should feel sturdy in your hand, and its blades should be sharp enough to handle coarse body hair without causing irritation.

I’ve filtered through the noise and highlighted only the best trimmers here. These are all products that stand out in terms of quality and reliability.

Overview: The Remington ShortCut Pro is all about efficiency. It features an extra-wide blade—60% wider than standard body groomers—allowing you to cover more ground quickly. If you’re someone with a lot of body hair and want to get the job done fast, this is the groomer for you.

The extendable back handle makes it easy to shave your back, while the non-slip grip ensures you won’t lose control even when using it in the shower. It’s fully waterproof, making it easy to use and clean.

However, the wider blade may make it harder to get a close shave in areas that require more precision, like your underarms or groin.

Bottom Line: The Remington ShortCut Pro is perfect for guys who want to shave large areas quickly, like their chest or back. It’s efficient and user-friendly, but less suited for more detailed grooming tasks.

How we choose these products

With so many body groomers out there, you’re probably wondering how we narrow it down to just the few we review. No, we don’t try every single model (that would be a lifetime commitment!), but we do focus on the most popular, well-reviewed, and high-quality options that suit a range of grooming needs.

We aim to strike the perfect balance between features, price, durability, and functionality. Some products specialize in specific tasks, like back or groin grooming, and we make sure to give those the attention they deserve. Ultimately, we want to help you find the best body groomer that fits your needs.

That said, if there’s a body groomer you think should be on the list or you disagree with any of our picks, we’d love to hear from you!

11 Quick tips to help you body groom like a pro

Even if you have the best grooming tool, it won’t do you much good if you don’t know how to use it properly. That’s why I’ve compiled some pro tips to help you get the most out of your body groomer. Trust me, these can save you from a lot of pain and embarrassment, while making sure you look your best.

1. Use the right tools

Don’t make the mistake of using a cheap disposable razor or your standard beard trimmer for body grooming. The results won’t be what you’re hoping for, and you’ll likely end up with cuts, razor burn, or bumps. Instead, use a body groomer designed for the task. These tools are specifically built for your body’s unique needs, and you won’t even need shaving cream.

And seriously, don’t use your beard trimmer on your body, especially not on your balls. Not only is it not designed for that, but do you really want to use the same trimmer on your face and your groin? Exactly.

2. Trim first, then shave

If you’ve got a lot of body hair or haven’t shaved in a while, take it slow. Don’t try to go from bushy to smooth in one go—trim your hair down first, then shave. This will make things much easier and prevent clogging your trimmer.

3. Shave with the grain

You’ve probably heard this when it comes to shaving your face, but it applies to your body too: always shave with the grain, not against it. Shaving against the grain can lead to irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.

4. To shower or not to shower?

Shaving in the shower has its pros and cons. On the plus side, the warm water softens your hair and skin, making it easier to shave. However, trimming longer body hair in the shower can be tricky because wet hair tends to stick to your skin. Decide what works best for you, but if you’re going for a clean shave, the shower might help.

5. Don’t shave everything

It’s easy to get carried away once you realize how smooth and clean you can be after grooming, but resist the urge to shave your entire body. Shaving certain areas, like your legs, arms, or butt, can cause chafing when the stubble grows back. Stick to trimming in those areas, and only shave places like your chest, shoulders, and back if needed.

6-11. Different body parts, different approaches

Here’s how to tackle specific areas of your body:

Gonads:

If you’re going to groom your pubic region, take it slow and use a groomer designed for the job. Pull the skin taut and be cautious around sensitive areas.

Chest:

Trimming your chest hair can help keep things neat. Fully shaving might seem tempting, but it can lead to uncomfortable stubble and irritation. Stick to trimming unless you’re going for the smooth look.

Underarms:

Trimming your underarm hair can help with sweating and odor, but leave a little hair there to maintain your natural pheromones. Don’t go too short unless it’s for comfort.

Backside:

Shaving your butt can lead to serious discomfort, especially when stubble starts to grow back. Trim if necessary, but skip full-on shaving unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Nose and ears:

Your nose and ear hair has a purpose, but no one wants to see it sticking out. Use a dedicated trimmer to keep things in check without going overboard.

Back and shoulders:

For most men, back and shoulder hair isn’t necessary. Use a body groomer with a back attachment, like the ones mentioned above, to keep things smooth without needing a second person to help.

Conclusion

There you have it: the best body groomers on the market, plus some helpful tips to make sure your grooming routine goes smoothly. Whether you’re looking for a dedicated back shaver, a groin-friendly trimmer, or an all-in-one solution, there’s something on this list for everyone.

Men’s Pubic Hair Trimmer Guide: My Personal Review

Let’s face it—women have always been ahead of us when it comes to grooming. They understand the importance of paying attention to every detail, especially when it comes to personal care, including trimming “down there.” But we’re catching up, and a good part of men’s grooming these days involves pubic hair trimming.

Whether you’ve already made pubic trimming part of your grooming routine or are thinking about it, having the right trimmer makes all the difference. Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way that using just any trimmer on those sensitive areas isn’t a great idea.

To help you out, I’ve personally tested several trimmers specifically designed for men’s pubic hair, and in this post, I’ll share my top picks and what you should look for when buying one. By the end of this, you’ll know exactly which trimmer fits your needs—and trust me, your man parts will thank you.

Before You Buy: 8 Things to Consider

Trimming your pubic hair isn’t something to take lightly, especially if you’ve had a few bad experiences with nicks or cuts (yeah, I’ve been there too). There’s a certain technique to it, and the right tools are essential. So, before you grab any trimmer, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. The More Powerful, the Better

When it comes to trimming pubes, the hair around your private areas is much coarser than the hair on other parts of your body. You need a trimmer with a powerful motor—look for one with at least 4,000 rpm. A weak motor will tug, pull, and just make the whole experience more painful. A powerful trimmer will cut through the hair smoothly, reducing the chances of irritation and uneven cuts.

2. Sharp Blades Are Essential

Dull blades just won’t cut it—literally. You want hypoallergenic, stainless steel blades that are sharp enough to trim effectively without pulling. These blades are designed to give you a clean, even trim without causing irritation, which is especially important for sensitive skin. I found that rounded blades work best for reducing the risk of nicks and cuts.

3. Cord or Cordless?

For trimming your pubic hair, I always recommend going cordless. A cord gets in the way, limiting your maneuverability, and trust me, you need to be able to reach those tricky spots without fussing over a tangled cord. A cordless trimmer lets you move freely, and most modern options have long-lasting batteries, so you won’t run out of juice mid-trim.

4. Battery Life

Since we’re talking cordless, don’t forget about battery life. A lot of trimmers take a while to charge, and you don’t want to start your trim only to have the battery die halfway through (been there, not fun). I always make sure my trimmer is fully charged before using it. Look for models that offer at least an hour of battery life and, if possible, a quick-charge feature for those last-minute touch-ups.

5. Attachments and Guards

Most good trimmers come with different guards and attachments, which allow you to trim at various lengths. This is especially handy if you want to keep things neat without going completely bald. And yes, a safety guard is crucial to avoid any accidental cuts or nicks—especially in delicate areas. I can’t stress enough how much safer these attachments make the process.

6. Size and Maneuverability

Bigger isn’t always better—at least not when it comes to pubic hair trimmers. A compact, easy-to-hold trimmer is ideal because you’ll need to maneuver around curves, folds, and other tricky spots. The smaller the trimmer, the more control you’ll have, which means a more precise and comfortable trimming experience.

7. Durability

Durability matters. You want a trimmer that can withstand frequent use and won’t start falling apart after just a few trims. Look for high-quality materials and check reviews to see how the product holds up over time. And trust me, don’t use the same trimmer for your beard and your pubes. Get a dedicated trimmer for your sensitive areas—it’s more hygienic and safer that way.

8. Wet, Dry, or Both?

Many trimmers today are designed for both wet and dry use, which is great if you prefer to trim in the shower. The warm water helps soften the hair and makes the trimming process smoother. However, if you’re more comfortable trimming dry, just make sure your trimmer can handle it. Personally, I’ve found that using a wet trimmer in the shower is a game-changer.

When it comes to pubic hair trimmers, the Cleancut ES412 is a classic, and it claims to be the first trimmer specifically designed for pubic hair. Whether or not that’s true, this trimmer remains one of the best on the market. I’ve tested it myself, and its performance in delicate areas is impressive.

The ES412 is made of durable stainless steel, which makes it long-lasting, and it’s versatile enough for both men and women to use on various body parts like armpits, bikini lines, and more. The real magic happens in its precision—it’s fantastic for getting a smooth trim without worrying about nicks or cuts.

Its motor is powerful enough to handle even the coarsest of pubic hair, which is a game-changer in ensuring a smooth, efficient trim. The blades glide smoothly and are coupled with a high-quality foil that captures hair without snagging your sensitive skin—a must when trimming your pubic area.

Another great feature of the ES412 is its ergonomic, cylindrical design, which makes it easy to maneuver around those tricky, hard-to-reach spots. Plus, the blades are not exposed, so you can trim with confidence, knowing you’re safe from accidental cuts.

One thing to keep in mind: if you’ve got longer hair, you may want to trim it down with scissors before using the ES412, as it’s best for shorter hair. And don’t forget to clean the inner blade and foil after each use for optimal performance.

Pros:

Durable stainless steel construction

Great for sensitive skin

Ergonomic design for easy handling

The pivoting head moves in four directions, making it easy to trim all around your pubic area without worrying about nicks or irritation. The self-sharpening blades are another feature I love because they ensure a smooth trim every time. With five adjustable lengths, you can get the exact trim length you prefer, making it one of the most customizable options on the market.

I also appreciate that it’s waterproof, so you can use it in the shower, which makes trimming easier and clean-up quicker. Plus, the ergonomic rubber grip gives you excellent control, which is essential when trimming around sensitive areas. The lithium-ion battery provides 80 minutes of cordless use after a full charge—more than enough time for a full grooming session.

Pros:

If you’re looking for a versatile trimmer that also handles pubic hair grooming with ease, the Gillette All Purpose Styler is a fantastic option. It’s slim, lightweight, and incorporates Braun technology for a powerful, smooth shave. It’s another one of those tools that’s easy to maneuver around your private areas, and it comes with Gillette’s signature ProGlide blades for precision.

This trimmer is powered by a Braun motor, which ensures enough torque to trim through coarser pubic hair while being gentle on the skin. The Styler also comes with three combs to give you flexibility in choosing your preferred hair length, and the precision edging blade is great for getting crisp lines if you’re into shaping or styling.

The Remington PG525 is more than just a trimmer—it’s an entire grooming kit. While I initially tested it for its pubic trimming abilities, this kit covers all your grooming needs with its eight attachments, including a full-size trimmer, foil shaver, nose and ear trimmer, and more. The body trimmer attachment comes with an adjustable comb that allows you to trim pubic hair at different lengths.

One of the standout features of the PG525 is its self-sharpening surgical steel blades, which stay sharp and provide a smooth trim every time. The body trimmer does a fantastic job in the pubic area, and its attachments give you the flexibility to trim other body parts with ease.

The PG525 is also equipped with a lithium battery that provides 70 minutes of runtime on a full charge. The attachments are waterproof, making cleaning easy, though the main unit itself isn’t waterproof, so you’ll need to be careful with that.

The Philips Norelco BG1026/60 is a solid contender if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that still delivers excellent results. While it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of more expensive models like the Norelco 7100, it’s definitely good enough to handle the job of trimming pubic hair.

The BG1026 is battery-powered, running on a single AA battery that gives you up to two months of normal use. I found this to be incredibly convenient, especially when traveling or when you don’t want to worry about finding a charging port. Some men might prefer rechargeable trimmers, but the portability of this battery-powered trimmer is a huge plus.

One standout feature of this trimmer is its integrated skin protector guards. These make it almost impossible to nick or cut yourself, especially when trimming the sensitive areas around your groin. I’ve used it for testicle trimming, and the bi-directional trimmer worked smoothly without tugging or pulling. The 1/8-inch comb attachment also gives you some flexibility to choose your desired hair length.

It’s lightweight and easy to maneuver, which makes all the difference when you’re trimming in those hard-to-reach areas. Another bonus: it’s waterproof, so feel free to use it in the shower. That said, I found it works a little better on dry hair, but having the option for wet trimming is always handy.

Pros:

Skin protector guards reduce the risk of nicks and cuts

Bi-directional trimming without tugging

Cons:

May need multiple passes over longer hair

Bottom Line: The Philips Norelco BG1026/60 is an excellent budget-friendly option. It’s easy to handle, gentle on sensitive skin, and gets the job done whether you’re using it for pubic grooming or overall body hair maintenance.

Here’s How You Should Trim Your Pubic Hair (A Simple, Illustrated Guide)

Let’s get real: trimming your pubic hair requires more finesse than trimming your beard or even shaving your face. One wrong move, and you could be in for a world of pain—something you definitely want to avoid when dealing with your most sensitive areas.

But why trim your pubes at all? Let’s talk about why it’s a good idea before diving into the best trimming techniques.

1. Why You Should Trim Your Pubes

Pubic trimming is about more than aesthetics, though I’ll admit it can make things look a little bigger down there. There are several practical reasons why trimming your pubic hair is worth considering.

It Makes You Look Bigger: Trimming a thick, unruly bush can make your manhood appear more prominent. It’s all about creating a cleaner, more defined look, which helps show off what you’ve got.

Hygiene: Pubic hair can trap sweat and bacteria, creating a breeding ground for germs. Regular trimming helps reduce this and keeps things cleaner, which is particularly important in the sweaty groin area.

Your Partner Will Thank You: No one enjoys getting stray pubic hairs in their mouth during intimate moments. Keeping your pubes trimmed makes oral activities more pleasant for your partner.

Comfort and Reduced Chafing: If you’re an active guy, trimming your pubes helps reduce chafing and discomfort caused by friction, especially during workouts or long days.

2. Comb Length: It Matters

Before you start trimming, you’ll need to pick the right comb length for your trimmer. The choice depends on how long your pubes are now and how short you want them to be. If it’s been a while since your last trim and you’re working with a forest down there, start with a longer guard and work your way down until you find the length that suits you.

3. Use the Right Tools

Don’t multi-task when it comes to grooming. Use a trimmer specifically designed for pubic hair to avoid accidents. Electric razors with rotating heads should not be used on your scrotum or anywhere near your penis—trust me on this one. Stick with a trimmer designed for sensitive areas, and use scissors to trim any extra-long hairs beforehand if needed.

4. Choose the Right Spot to Trim

If you’re trimming in the shower, clean-up is a breeze. But if you’re trimming dry, consider doing it over the toilet or in the bathtub to minimize the mess. Whatever you do, make sure you have plenty of light and easy access to a mirror if needed.

5. Wash Up First

Cleanliness is key before you start trimming. Use soap and water to wash your groin area, removing any bacteria that could cause infection if you accidentally nick yourself.

6. Use a Hand Mirror

When trimming around your testicles or the underside of your penis, it’s hard to see what’s going on without a mirror. A hand mirror can be a lifesaver for tracking your progress and ensuring you don’t miss any spots.

7. Rinse Thoroughly

After trimming, always rinse thoroughly to get rid of stray hairs. Whether you’re in the shower or using a towel, make sure to wash off any remnants before putting on clothes.

8. Moisturize

After trimming, it’s a good idea to apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or after-shave to reduce irritation. Avoid anything with harsh chemicals or perfumes that could irritate sensitive skin.

9. Trim Regularly

Pubic hair grows back at a slower rate than head hair, so you won’t need to trim every week. Once every couple of weeks should do the trick, depending on your personal preferences. Keeping things maintained will make future trims easier and quicker.

10. Trimming Your Balls: Extra Care Needed

Your testicles are extremely sensitive, so trimming this area requires extra caution. Always pull the skin taut to avoid nicks, and if you do accidentally cut yourself, clean the area with soap and water immediately. Apply some alcohol to disinfect, even though it’s going to sting—better safe than sorry.

Why Use a Pubic Trimmer Instead of Other Trimming Tools?

When men start exploring the world of pubic trimming, it’s easy to think you can get the job done with whatever tools you already have lying around—maybe some scissors, a regular razor, or the trimmer you use for your beard. Trust me, this can lead to all sorts of complications and discomfort. While you might think your face trimmer can multitask, you really need a tool specifically designed for the job. Here’s why:

You Need a Trimmer That’s Easy to Handle

Trimming down there isn’t just about hacking away at one section of hair. You have to tackle multiple areas, including the hair above your penis, under it, and the areas surrounding your testicles. These are tricky spots to reach and require precision.

A pubic trimmer is built for this type of work. They are typically lightweight and easy to maneuver, which is exactly what you need when trimming those hard-to-reach areas. The last thing you want is a bulky shaver that’s difficult to control around such a sensitive zone. A firm grip is essential for both comfort and safety.

Avoid the Pain with the Right Tool

Let’s be real: trimming around your private parts requires a delicate touch. Using the wrong tool, such as a facial razor or even scissors, can lead to painful nicks and cuts. You don’t want to learn that lesson the hard way. In fact, studies have shown that a significant number of injuries to men’s groin areas that required emergency room visits were caused by using the wrong trimming tools.

By opting for a trimmer specifically designed for pubic hair, you reduce the risk of painful mishaps and potential infections. Why risk it?

Keep Your Grooming Hygienic

It’s no secret that your pubic area harbors more bacteria than other parts of your body. Using the same tool for both your face and your groin isn’t just unsanitary, it’s a recipe for transferring bacteria to your face. Gross, right?

The solution? Get yourself a dedicated pubic trimmer. It’s cleaner, safer, and just makes more sense from a hygiene perspective. You wouldn’t use the same towel to wipe your face and your feet, right?

Gain Confidence and Control

There’s naturally a bit of anxiety involved when trimming around your most sensitive areas. I know I was nervous the first time I tried it. But using a tool that’s designed for the job makes the whole process smoother. With the right pubic trimmer, you can be confident that you’ll get the job done without unwanted cuts or discomfort.

Choosing the Best Pubic Trimmers for Men: How We Did It

When it comes to choosing the best pubic trimmers, we didn’t take this task lightly. After all, the stakes are high! There may not be an overwhelming number of trimmers dedicated solely to pubic hair, but there are enough quality options that we were able to compile a solid list.

Here’s what we focused on when reviewing trimmers:

Maneuverability: We looked for trimmers that are lightweight and easy to handle, with ergonomic designs that make it easier to navigate those tricky, hard-to-reach areas.

Blade Quality: The sharper and more precise the blades, the better. No one wants dull blades causing unnecessary discomfort.

Durability: A good trimmer should last you a long time, even with regular use. We made sure the options on our list are built to last.

Wet & Dry Use: While it’s not a must for everyone, the ability to use the trimmer both in and out of the shower is a nice convenience, so we considered that in our picks.

Customer Reviews: We didn’t just rely on our own experiences—customer reviews were crucial in assessing real-world performance and satisfaction.

Conclusion

Trimming your pubic hair has become an essential part of self-care for many men today. It’s not just about appearances; it’s about hygiene, comfort, and feeling confident. Using the right tool—one specifically designed for pubic trimming—makes the whole process safer and more effective.

Let’s be real: back hair is not ideal

Shaving your back might sound strange at first, but trust me—once you give it a try, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner. At first, I was skeptical, too, but after trying a few products and getting used to the process, I realized how much better it feels to be clean and smooth. Whether you’re going for a cleaner look, feeling fresher, or simply avoiding the “grizzly bear” back, a good back shaver is a must.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the 5 best back shavers on the market, based on my personal experiences. I’ve tested these products, and I’m here to help you figure out which one works best for your needs. Whether you’re dealing with serious back hair or just some annoying patches, there’s something here for you.

On top of that, I’ll give you some tips on how to prepare for a back shave and even compare shaving to waxing so you can choose what’s right for you.

Things you need before shaving the hair on your back

Shaving your back isn’t like shaving your face—it requires a little more preparation. Since it’s a tough area to reach, you’ll need some extra tools to make the process easier and more effective. Let me walk you through the basics so you can get started with the right setup.

1. Apply pre-shave oil

Just like your face, your back needs to be properly moisturized before shaving to avoid razor burn. I’ve found that applying pre-shave oil helps soften the skin and makes the whole experience a lot smoother. It reduces friction and allows the blade to glide over your skin without causing irritation or cuts. Trust me, your back will thank you.

2. Applicator brush

You’ll need a way to spread the pre-shave oil or cream on your back, and an applicator brush with a long handle is perfect for the job. Make sure to choose one with soft bristles. I learned the hard way that stiff bristles can scrape more than they lather. The soft-bristled brush helps spread the cream evenly and leaves enough product on the skin for the shaver to work with.

3. Hand mirror

It’s impossible to see what you’re doing without a hand mirror. Grab a small one and use it along with the full-length mirror in your bathroom. This setup will give you a full view of your back, so you can see what you’re doing and make sure you don’t miss any spots.

4. A collecting sheet

Shaving your back can be messy. The last thing you want is hair all over the floor, so I recommend standing on a plastic sheet. It makes cleanup so much easier—you can just toss the sheet and avoid clogging your drain or covering your bathroom floor with hair.

5. Back shaver

This is the most important tool you’ll need. Trust me, don’t try using a regular razor on your back—it’s not designed for such a large surface area, and you’ll end up frustrated and patchy. Back shavers are designed to reach those hard-to-access areas, and they make the whole process a lot easier and more efficient.

Before you buy: 6 Things to consider when purchasing a back shaver

Choosing the right back shaver can be tricky with so many options out there, but I’ve narrowed it down to the key factors you need to consider before buying one.

1. The power source: electric, battery, or manual

You’ve got three choices: electric, battery-powered, or manual.

Electric shavers are great if you’re near a power source but be mindful of the cord—it can limit your movement.

Battery-powered shavers are super convenient for portability, but always check how long the battery lasts. It’s a pain to be halfway through a shave and run out of power.

Manual shavers are like using a standard razor, except for your back. You power it yourself, which can be handy if you want to shave anywhere without needing a battery or outlet.

2. Handle length matters

You’ll need a handle that can reach all parts of your back, including those hard-to-reach areas. Some models come with extendable or retractable handles, which are super useful for customizing your reach. Make sure the handle stays locked in place—there’s nothing worse than it collapsing while you’re mid-shave.

3. Flexible head

A flexible head that follows the contours of your back makes for a smoother and more comfortable shave. Trust me, it’s the difference between an easy, comfortable shave and a frustrating one that leaves missed patches. If the shaver doesn’t have a flexible head, at least make sure it has gentle blades to avoid nicks and cuts.

4. Cleaning and maintenance

You don’t want a shaver that’s a pain to clean. The easier it is to maintain, the longer it will last. Look for one that’s easy to clean and doesn’t require too much maintenance between shaves.

5. Replacement blades

Shaving with dull blades is no fun, so keep in mind how often you’ll need to replace the blades and how much that’ll cost. Some shavers have long-lasting blades, but when replacements are needed, you don’t want them to break the bank.

6. Warranty

A good warranty gives you peace of mind, knowing the company stands behind its product. Always check the warranty before making your purchase. A longer warranty usually means the company is confident in the quality of their shaver.

How We Determined Our Top Back Shavers

There’s a surprising variety of back shavers on the market today, and it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. While certain brands like Mangroomer dominate the back-shaving industry, there are many quality products to consider. So how did we narrow down our list?

We focused on several key criteria:

Ease of Use:
The best back shavers should be easy to handle and use, even for hard-to-reach areas. We looked for tools with long, ergonomic handles, flexible heads, and intuitive designs.

Durability:
You want a back shaver that will last, so we prioritized products made with high-quality materials, including stainless steel blades and sturdy handles.

Comfort:
Comfort is critical when shaving your back. We looked for shavers that offer smooth, irritation-free results, with features like shock-absorbing heads and hypoallergenic blades.

Effectiveness:
Of course, a back shaver needs to do its job well. We chose shavers that provide a close, clean shave without requiring multiple passes or causing nicks and cuts.

Customer Reviews:
We also took into account the opinions of real users, scouring reviews to find products that consistently met the needs of men dealing with back hair.

How to Easily Shave Your Back in 7 Illustrated Steps

Shaving your back might sound like a daunting task, but with the right tools and technique, it’s a lot easier than you think. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the best results.

1. Exfoliate Your Skin First

Before you even think about shaving, it’s important to exfoliate your back. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing for a closer shave and reducing the risk of ingrown hairs. You can use an exfoliating body wash or a loofah with a long handle to reach all areas of your back.

2. Trim First, Shave Later

If your back hair is particularly long, it’s best to trim it down before shaving. You can use a body trimmer or even a beard trimmer for this. Trimming helps prevent your razor from getting clogged and makes the shaving process much smoother.

3. Check the Blades

Always make sure your blades are sharp before shaving. Dull blades won’t give you a close shave and can cause irritation. Whether you’re using a manual or electric back shaver, sharp blades are key to a clean shave.

4. Apply Shaving Cream or Gel

Shaving cream or gel is essential for a smooth shave, especially if you’re using a manual back shaver. It provides lubrication, reduces friction, and helps protect your skin from nicks and cuts. Make sure to apply it evenly over your back.

5. Start Shaving

Begin with the easy-to-reach areas of your back, and work your way to the more challenging spots. Go slowly, and use a mirror to ensure you don’t miss any areas. Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation.

6. Rinse and Dry

After you’ve finished shaving, rinse your back thoroughly with cool water to remove any leftover shaving cream and hair. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel—don’t rub, as this can cause irritation.

7. Moisturize

The final step is to moisturize your back. A good moisturizer will soothe your skin, reduce irritation, and prevent dryness. This step is especially important if you have sensitive skin or tend to get razor burn.

The Difference Between Using an Electric Back Shaver or a Razor

Choosing between an electric back shaver and a manual one depends on your needs and preferences. Let’s break down the key differences to help you make the right choice for your grooming routine.

Blades

The most significant difference between electric and manual back shavers is the type of blades they use.

Electric shavers typically come with self-sharpening blades, which means you won’t need to replace them as often. The upfront cost might be higher, but you’ll save on replacement blades in the long run. Additionally, the blades can often be adjusted to achieve different lengths for trimming.

Manual shavers, on the other hand, require replaceable blades. While these blades are often sharper and provide a closer shave, the cost of replacement blades can add up over time. The good news is that the wider design of manual back shavers allows for more flexibility in following the contours of your back.

Power Source

The power source is another major difference between electric and manual shavers.

Electric shavers rely on batteries, and while convenient, you’ll need to ensure the battery life is long enough for a full shave. Many electric models come with a power cord for use when the battery runs low, but the cord can sometimes restrict your movement. When choosing an electric back shaver, consider battery life, charging time, and whether the unit can be used cordlessly for better mobility.

Manual shavers don’t require any power source. As long as you’ve got the strength to move your arm, you can shave your back whenever needed. They’re perfect for traveling and eliminating the worry of running out of battery in the middle of a grooming session.

Maintenance

Manual back shavers are straightforward when it comes to maintenance. Other than changing the blades when they dull, there’s little else required.

Electric shavers require a bit more upkeep. You’ll need to clean the moving parts and ensure the device is working correctly over time. However, many modern electric shavers come with easy-clean designs, and the maintenance isn’t too much of a hassle.

Smoothness of the Shave

Electric shavers often come with built-in guards and safety covers that make it harder to cut yourself. Most electric shavers also lift the hair before trimming, reducing the chances of irritation and nicks. While they may not give quite as close a shave as a manual razor, the difference is minimal.

Manual shavers, while capable of providing an incredibly close shave, do come with a higher risk of nicks and cuts, especially on sensitive areas of the back. The blades are sharper, so you’ll need to take your time and shave carefully.

Should I Shave or Wax?

When it comes to removing back hair, shaving and waxing are two of the most popular methods. But which one is best for you? Let’s break down the pros and cons of each.

Shaving

Most men are familiar with shaving. It’s straightforward, quick, and doesn’t require much beyond a shaver and possibly some shaving cream.

Pros:
Shaving is inexpensive, and you can do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. With an electric back shaver, it’s easy to manage hard-to-reach areas, and it’s a painless process compared to waxing. You can shave in the shower for even smoother results.

Cons:
The downside is that shaving is not a permanent solution. Hair will grow back quickly, meaning you’ll need to shave regularly to maintain smooth skin. There’s also the risk of ingrown hairs and razor burn if you’re not careful.

Waxing

Waxing offers longer-lasting results because it removes hair from the root. You can expect to stay smooth for up to six weeks after a waxing session.

Pros:
Waxing lasts much longer than shaving, and over time, your hair may grow back thinner and less noticeable. It’s also great for those who want to avoid frequent grooming.

Cons:
The biggest downside to waxing is the pain factor. Pulling hair out by the roots is not exactly pleasant, though professionals have refined techniques to minimize discomfort. Waxing is also more expensive than shaving, especially if you opt for professional services. If you have sensitive skin, waxing could lead to irritation, so it’s important to consult a professional about the right type of wax for your skin type.

Conclusion

Shaving your back is a great way to improve your grooming routine, and whether you go with an electric or manual back shaver is up to your personal preference. Electric shavers offer convenience and safety, while manual shavers provide a closer shave at a lower cost. Regular shaving will help you avoid razor burn, and keeping up with your back hair will ensure you’re always looking and feeling your best.

If you’re looking for longer-lasting results, waxing might be worth a try. Just be prepared for some discomfort, and know that it’s not the cheapest option.

Whatever method you choose, regular grooming is key to maintaining smooth skin and boosting your confidence.
